Democracy needs to be nurtured. There need to be regulations, protocols in place for a land where the people choose(well almost).
Few weeks ago there was gloom about India’s prospects. Doubts about its ability to deliver goods for the much controversial CWG, problems(political, ofcourse) in Kashmir, Maoist threat, awaited Obama visit et al. And our much loved media was the one fighting over for TRPs in these desperate times. Sensationalizing almost everything and almost making the bureaucrats, ministers have a nervous breakdown. As almost every other developed country news or any other type of media starts to become a commodity.
This may be dangerous. Reasons: People don’t have any time to retrospect. They don’t look back and don’t connect the dots as Steve Jobs famously referred to.
But now the gray cloud seems to have passed over. And now retrospecting one can see there was much gaga over nothing(thankfully).
This world has a unique characteristic of putting things in place itself. Now i’m not justifying the efforts/ preparations that need to done. But look at the scenario at this point in time: CWG were handled better than expected, Kashmir issue has again been put on the back burner, President Obama is coming to town with a few New Year gifts etc,
Hence now coming back to the point of democracy, it seems to me that we as a people, we as a democracy still are a far way off from being that sensible or plausible society which we are so fond of.
But ending on a hopeful note, in words of President Obama, the road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term, but India – I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. Hopeful because of a 1.2 billion strong market(remember the famous phrase – it’s the economy, stupid), most favorable demographics, increasing literacy and standards of education among others.
There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many decisions or policies that won’t work but in the end WE AS A PEOPLE WILL GET THERE.
